Making the Unknown Known
Astronomers are looking ever deeper, outward into the universe, back in time toward that infinitely small moment of creation. I am drawn inward, in the Quaker belief that there is a spark of the divine within each of us and all life. The paradox that these may be the same journey inspires me. I drove through a rural area west of my home in Northwest Arkansas, with my camera but no specific goal in mind. It was late in the day when I came to a simple, white country church standing alone in some fields at a crossroad. The church windows were edged with squares of colored glass, and the horizontal rays of the sun shone through the windows on far side and out those on the other, creating an inner glow. The images in this project emerged later as they called to me to look deeper into the light for something that almost certainly always will remain an unknown, just beyond my awareness. I am glad it can be sought in such simple moments
